In a memorable Black History Month session held at Gensler’s Birmingham office, David Oswald Springer (DOS) was invited to share his personal and artistic journey with a select group of 20 Gensler Europe team members. Known for his start as a graffiti artist across Birmingham and his evolution into screen printing, Dave’s work continues to resonate with themes of identity, resistance, and community—values deeply tied to Black history and culture.

The recent celebration at the Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) in Birmingham honored the life and legacy of poet and activist Benjamin Zephaniah. Organized by the Benjamin Zephaniah Family Legacy Group, the event was an artistic tribute that brought together family, creatives, and admirers, blending music, poetry, and visual art to celebrate Zephaniah’s impact on Birmingham and beyond.

This summer, Birmingham takes center stage with Benjamin Zephaniah – The Brighter Flame, a tribute to the legendary poet and activist. From July 5th to July 31st, 2024, Birmingham’s city center will host an exhibition showcasing over 20 specially curated artworks in Victoria Square and along Colmore Row, inviting the community to engage with Zephaniah’s life and legacy.

The event at SoHo House Birmingham, co-hosted with PHORM under the “Cities Without Houses” initiative, was a unique reflection on the intersection of art, culture, and personal narratives. Titled “Chew the Phat,” it served as a platform to not only pay homage to the late Benjamin Zephaniah but also to spotlight the creative journey of his brother, David O Springer (aka DOS), a distinguished screen printer and print pioneer.
