Celebrating the Legacy of Benjamin Zephaniah
This summer, Birmingham takes center stage with Benjamin Zephaniah – The Brighter Flame, a tribute to the legendary poet and activist. From July 5th to July 31st, 2024, Birmingham’s city center will host an exhibition showcasing over 20 specially curated artworks in Victoria Square and along Colmore Row, inviting the community to engage with Zephaniah’s life and legacy.
David O Springer, Benjamin’s brother and a respected artist, will play a central role in honouring his sibling. On July 5th, he will join an invitation-only spoken word event at The Exchange, where he’ll take part in a Q&A. This discussion offers a rare glimpse into Benjamin’s life from the perspective of someone who shared in his journey and witnessed his impact up close.
The exhibition will feature large-scale black-and-white portraits by Birmingham artist Pogus Caesar, as well as poems and photographs from the influential Handsworth 1985 Revisited project. These works, steeped in the cultural and political spirit of Birmingham, capture Zephaniah’s dedication to social justice—a commitment that David O Springer passionately continues in his own art. David’s connection to The Brighter Flame serves as a reminder that Benjamin’s voice and values live on through those who knew him best.
